Buckle up

The day has finally arrived. After what feels like an emotional eternity (OK, technically a year and a half), Hulu’s addictive drama Tell Me Lies is back for season three. Based on Carola Lovering’s novel of the same name, the series returned on January 13 with its first three episodes, and yes, people are already spiraling. Toxic? Check. Chaotic? Absolutely. Emotionally exhausting? Always.

Before you dive headfirst back into the mess (and let’s be honest, you will), here’s a refresher on a few key plot points worth remembering.

At its core, Tell Me Lies tracks the on-again, off-again relationship between Lucy Albright (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen DeMarco (Jackson White) over the course of eight years after they meet in college. The timelines bounce between past and present, revealing how deeply tangled and damaging their connection really is.

1. First things first: Stephen and Lucy are back together.

Despite Lucy’s attempt to move on with Leo, that relationship came crashing down after Leo became violent with Stephen. Lucy ultimately couldn’t look past his anger issues, pushing her right back into Stephen’s orbit. A choice? Sure. A good one? Debatable.

2. Then there’s the Evan-Bree-Lucy situation (still painful, still messy).

Stephen knows Evan cheated on Bree with Lucy after Evan decided to confess. While Stephen played it cool, he secretly recorded the confession and clearly never planned to let it go. Years later, that recording resurfaces in the most brutal way possible, when Stephen sends it to Bree on her wedding day.

3. Speaking of Bree's wedding day, let's not forget those anonymous, cryptic phone calls she received.

Because yes, those absolutely matter.

4. Pippa and Diana’s reconnection is another thread to watch.

While it’s still unclear how they fully re-entered each other’s lives, flashbacks to 2008 show Diana becoming a safe person for Pippa after Chris attempted to sexually assault her, adding important emotional context to their present-day dynamic.

5. And finally, Wrigley.

Season two was rough. He and Pippa broke up, his brother Drew died after mixing alcohol and drugs, and in the 2015 timeline, it’s clear he never fully recovered. There are even hints that he might be harboring feelings for... Bree?!

Honestly, so much happened (and so much time passed between seasons) that a full rewatch wouldn’t be a bad idea. But if you’re impatient like me, this refresher should at least help jog your memory.

The first three episodes of Tell Me Lies season three are streaming now on Hulu, with new episodes dropping weekly on Tuesdays.
