21 Shows Like ‘Yellowstone’ to Binge-Watch After Season 5

In case you missed it, the season five premiere of Yellowstone set a new ratings record with over 12 million views—and we can see why. The Western drama boasts a phenomenal cast, timely themes and, best of all, surprising twists to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Case in point? The midseason finale ends with Beth declaring war on Jamie while John's political career hangs in the balance. And now, fans are wondering: Can Jamie really remove his father from office?

We won't get answers until part two of the final season, which premieres in November 2023. But until then, we're filling the Dutton family void with these 21 binge-worthy shows like Yellowstone. 1. The Sopranos

3. Succession

Ladies and gents, allow us to introduce Yellowstone’s twin from the east coast, minus the cowboy hats and massive cattle ranch. In the series, Logan Roy—a harsh, no-nonsense patriarch and billionaire owner of a media conglomerate—must deal with his declining health as his adult children compete to take over the family empire. Expect plenty of drama and clever humor.

4. Bloodline

Like the Duttons, the Rayburns carry a whole lot of baggage and dark secrets. Set in Florida, the series follows a well-off family who are forced to confront their complicated past when an estranged relative (AKA the black sheep of the family) returns home. From the mystery elements to the complicated family dynamic, this one is going to keep you on the edge of your seat.

5. 1883

• Cast: Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill
• Rating: TV-MA

Of course, we must include the famed prequel to the series. In 1883, fans get to know how Yellowstone Ranch was born, focusing on John’s great-grandfather, James, who leaves Texas and eventually settles in Montana to build his family’s legacy. It’s no wonder John goes to such great lengths to protect their land.

The spin-off series takes place after 1883 but before Yellowstone, following the Dutton family during the Great Depression in the early 20th century. (FYI, Mirren and Ford are total scene-stealers.)

7. Joe Pickett

• Cast: Michael Dorman, Julianna Guill, Sharon Lawrence
• Rating: TV-MA

Michael Dorman is Joe Pickett, a game warden in Wyoming who gets reeled into a murder investigation when he finds a dead man on his doorstep. Those who are familiar with C.J. Box's books, which inspired the series, should know that the writers stayed true to the original storylines. And as a bonus, the Spectrum original is returning to Paramount+ for a second season, so Joe’s story isn’t over just yet.

8. Deadwood 

• Cast: Timothy Olyphant, Ian McShane, Molly Parker
• Rating: TV-MA

Set in the 1870s (and inspired by real events), the show revolves around the residents of Deadwood in South Dakota—a town that turns deeply corrupt following the Custer massacre. Among those residents is newbie Sheriff Seth Bullock, who’s looking to get a fresh start, but he gets more than he bargained for. Watching the complex characters try to navigate a lawless society is always intriguing.

9. Mayor of Kingstown 

• Cast: Jeremy Renner, Dianne Wiest, Hugh Dillon, Tobi Bamtefa
• Rating: TV-MA

Taylor Sheridan, the mastermind behind Yellowstone, also co-created this epic crime thriller, which tackles racism and America's flawed prison system. In the series, the McLusky family isn’t living on a ranch—instead, they’re in Kingstown, Michigan, where the only thriving business is the prison industry.

10. Longmire 

• Cast: Robert Taylor, Katee Sackhoff, Lou Diamond Phillips
• Rating: TV-MA

Based on Craig Johnson's book series, Walt Longmire Mysteries, this Western drama revolves around Walt, a recently widowed sheriff who tries to heal from his loss as he works on solving crimes in Absaroka County, Wyoming. The series is packed with well-rounded, memorable characters, but viewers also appreciate Walt’s old-school methods and dry wit.

11. Breaking Bad

On the surface, it doesn’t have much in common with Yellowstone, but there’s a bit of John Dutton in Walter White, thanks to his fierce determination to provide and protect his family. The Emmy-winning series revolves around a high school chemistry teacher who gets diagnosed with lung cancer. To secure his family’s future, he resorts to launching an underground drug lab and dealing crystal meth. And of course, that process isn’t exactly smooth sailing.

12. Sons of Anarchy 

• Cast: Charlie Hunnam, Katey Sagal, Mark Boone Junior, Kim Coates
• Rating: TV-MA

A stellar cast, strong female characters and themes of betrayal and loyalty are just a few common threads between Yellowstone and this riveting series. Sons of Anarchy follows Jax Teller, the vice president of a motorcycle club in Charming, California. When he discovers a manifesto written by his late father and former club president, he starts to struggle with self-doubt and questions whether the club is due for some changes.

13. Big Sky 

• Cast: Katheryn Winnick, Kylie Bunbury, Brian Geraghty
• Rating: TV-MA

Similar to Yellowstone, Big Sky is set in Montana and features quite a few twists to keep you engaged. It follows a private detective who teams up with a former cop to investigate the kidnapping of two sisters. The pair come to realize that there’s a killer on the loose who’s targeting young women, but can they crack the case before he harms his next victim?

14. Godless

• Cast: Jeff Daniels, Michelle Dockery, Jack O'Connell
• Rating: TV-MA

If you’re drawn to John’s no-nonsense daughter, Beth Dutton, then it’s time to visit a little town called La Belle. Set in 1884, Godless follows an outlaw who’s on the run from his former partner. When he stumbles upon a town in New Mexico that’s populated by mostly women, he decides to take refuge there—but his former partner isn’t letting him get away that easily. 

15. Ozark 

• Cast: Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, Sofia Hublitz
• Rating: TV-MA

The Byrdes may not own 776,000 acres of land, but like the Dutton family, their drama follows them wherever they go. The series focuses on Marty Byrde, a Chicago-based financial adviser who leads a double life as a top money-launderer for a Mexican drug cartel. When one job goes horribly wrong, he’s forced to move his entire family to the Missouri Ozarks and pay off a massive debt to keep his family safe.

16. Justified

• Cast: Timothy Olyphant, Walton Goggins, Nick Searcy
• Rating: TV-MA

In this criminally underrated crime drama, U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens gets reassigned from Miami to Kentucky after his Wild West methods of executing the law get him in trouble with his bosses. And the craziest part? He is sent to the district of his childhood home. There are quite a few similarities between John Dutton and Givens, as they both carry an air of confidence and play by their own rules.

17. Hell on Wheels 

• Cast: Anson Mount, Dominque McElligott, Common
• Rating: TV-MA

This series depicts the construction of the first transcontinental railroad, and it mainly focuses on former Confederate soldier Cullen Bohannon, who tries to exact revenge on the Union soldiers who murdered his family during the Civil War. Something tells us he’d get along well with John Dutton.

18. Outer Range

• Cast: Josh Brolin, Lili Taylor, Noah Reid
• Rating: TV-MA

The Prime Video series is essentially a copy of Yellowstone, but with sci-fi elements. Royal Abbott, a Wyoming rancher, goes out of his way to protect his land and his family, but he’s stunned to find a mysterious, magical hole in the pasture. Since a rival family, the Tillersons, is relentlessly trying to take over the Abbotts’s property, Royal must figure out how to deal with the massive black void on his property.

19. The Son

• Cast: Pierce Brosnan, Jacob Lofland, Sydney Lucas
• Rating: TV-MA

Speaking of intimidating patriarchs, The Son follows a powerful, ruthless cattle baron named Eli McCullough. Set in Texas during the 1800s, Eli ventures into the oil industry and seeks to build an empire that he can pass down to his children. The gritty series expertly tackles father-son relationships and loyalty. 

20. Hatfields & McCoys

• Cast: Kevin Costner, Bill Paxton, Tom Berenger, Mare Winningham, Jena Malone
• Rating: TV-MA

Inspired by the real-life feud between two American families on the West Virginia/Kentucky border during the 1800s, this miniseries offers a fictionalized version of events. It's gritty and quite intense, and not surprisingly, Costner delivers a standout performance as Devil Anse.

21. Walker

• Cast: Jared Padalecki, Lindsey Morgan, Molly Hagan, Keegan Allen
• Rating: TV-14

Sam Winchester Padalecki shines as Cordell Walker, a widowed Texas Ranger who returns home after working undercover on a high-profile case. He's met with even more challenges when he tries to reconnect with his family and work with his new partner.
