The new family joined the neighborhood in the show’s latest episode, titled “Family Day.” As Frank notes, the theme of the milestone installment is that “there’s all kinds of different families, but what makes us a family is that we love each other.” We couldn’t agree more.
Shortly after the episode aired on PBS, co-director Alan Muraoka shared his excitement on Facebook, where he revealed that it was a long time coming.
“Sesame Street has always been a welcoming place of diversity and inclusion,” he wrote. “I’m so excited to introduce Nina’s Brother Dave, his husband Frank, and their daughter Mia to our sunny street. I am so honored and humbled to have co-directed this important and milestone episode. Love is love, and we are so happy to add this special family to our Sesame family. Happy Pride to all!!!!”
This isn’t the first time Sesame Street has made history with their new characters and subject matter. It previously introduced the show’s first-ever character with autism, Julia, and has covered everything from homelessness to addiction and racism.
