Proof that Serena van der Woodsen Is Actually the Villain of ‘Gossip Girl’

It’s officially time to discuss the “worst Upper East Sider of them all.” (Hint: It’s not Ramona Singer from The Real Housewives of New York.)

On the latest episode of PureWow’s YouTube series The Worst, which highlights the most cringe-worthy TV characters of all time, Matthew offers three reasons why Serena van der Woodsen (played by Blake Lively) is the secret villain of Gossip Girl.

If you’re a fan, don’t be too alarmed. As Matthew points out, “You can love Blake Lively, but you can hate Serena van der Woodsen.” After all, she’s a fictional character—not a real person.

Watch this video to see Matthew’s review (and keep scrolling to learn why Serena van der Woodsen is the absolute worst).

3 Ways Serena Van Der Woodsen Is The Worst:

1. She’s a bad friend.
As Matthew points out, Serena didn’t treat Blair like a BFF. “She ruined several of Blair’s relationships,” he says. “And let’s not forget in episode one, we found out Serena slept with Blair’s boyfriend. And then left town in the middle of the night because she felt too guilty to tell Blair what she did.” Tsk tsk.

2. She’s *very* selfish
There are multiple times when Serena puts herself before others, which—according to Matthew—is unacceptable. “She up and left Pete Fairman as he was having an overdose,” he explains. And then adds, “She leaves New York to go to boarding school in Connecticut to leave trouble and then she has an affair with her teacher. And her teacher goes to jail!”

3. She’s a bad daughter
Not only does Serena get “away with everything,” but she also has zero respect for her mom’s past. “She is dating Dan, while her mom is dating Rufus,” Matthew says. “That’s f***ing weird. I would never date my mom’s boyfriend’s son.”
