This Netflix Hidden Gem Is a Must-Watch Thriller (& It Just Became the #5 Movie)

This all-new Netflix movie takes claustrophobia to an entirely new level. (You’ve been warned.)

We’re talking about Oxygen, the streaming service’s latest sci-fi thriller. It might have popped up in the “suggested for you” section, since it just premiered earlier this week.

Despite its newness, the flick has already claimed the number five spot on Netflix’s list of most-watched movies. (It’s currently ranked behind The Mitchells vs. the Machines, Dead Man Down, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted and Monster.)

So, what’s it about? It tells the story of a young woman named Elizabeth “Liz” Hanson (Mélanie Laurent), who finds herself in a terrifying situation. It all starts when she mysteriously wakes up in a medical cryo unit. The worst part? She has no idea how she became locked up in the coffin-like chamber, and she’s running out of air…fast.

In addition to Laurent, Oxygen also stars Mathieu Amalric (M.I.L.O.), Malik Zidi (Léo), Laura Boujenah (Alice), Eric Herson-Macarel (Capitaine Moreau) and Anie Balestra (Femma).

The film was directed by Alexandre Aja (High Tension), while Christie LeBlanc (Road Trip) wrote the screenplay. Aja and LeBlanc also served as executive producers alongside Serge Catoire (Love), Laurence Clerc (High Life), James Engle (The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor), Franck Khalfoun (Maniac), Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and Adam Riback (Paranoia).

The movie received a solid score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 95 percent positive rating. According to the official description, “Oxygen gets the white-knuckle maximum out of its claustrophobic setting, with director Alexandre Aja and star Mélanie Laurent making this a must-watch thriller for sci-fi fans.”

Are you ready? *Takes deep breath*
