A new crime thriller has officially climbed into Netflix’s Top 10. Sitting just behind K-Pop Demon Hunters is a dark, gritty film called Night Always Comes. The movie dropped on the streamer less than a week ago (on August 15, to be exact) and it’s already stirring up major buzz—for one big reason: no one can seem to agree if they love it or hate it.

Let’s start at the beginning—what is Night Always Comes even about? The Netflix original is based on the 2021 novel The Night Always Comes by Willy Vlautin. It stars Vanessa Kirby (Mission: Impossible, Fantastic Four) as Lynette, a flawed but fiercely determined anti-heroine who dives headfirst into Portland’s criminal underworld in a desperate, all-night race to come up with $25,000 to keep her family from being evicted.

The cast is stacked, too—featuring Jennifer Jason Leigh, Zack Gottsagen, Stephan James, Randall Park, Julia Fox, Michael Kelly and Eli Roth.

The trailer alone hints at just how intense this ride gets. We’re talking car theft, physical violence, drug deals and sex work—all in the name of survival. It’s a high-stakes story that has you on the edge-of-your-seat wondering one gripping question: Will she get the money in time?

If you’re on the fence about watching, fair warning: Rotten Tomatoes won’t help you much. The film currently holds a 58% critics score and a 44% audience score—basically split right down the middle. And the reviews? Just as divided.

“Frankly, we’ve seen too many stories like this one over the past two decades,” one critic shared. Meanwhile, another raved, “A remarkable drama with thriller-like characteristics about a woman’s desperate attempts to avoid losing everything.”

Some fans have even taken the mixed reviews personally. “For this to have a low rating kinda pisses me off,” one viewer commented. Another advised, “This is a good lesson in NOT looking at the reviews first! This was one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.”

So…what’s the verdict? Looks like you’ll have to watch and decide for yourself.

Night Always Comes is streaming now on Netflix.
