After a three-year wait, Beef is officially back for season two on Netflix. All eight episodes of the anthology series dropped on April 16, and early reactions suggest viewers are already locked in. But if you were expecting a continuation of the original story, this season is doing something different: it’s a full reset with an entirely new cast and a surprising real-life family connection behind the scenes.

So what’s the connection? Series creator Lee Sung Jin shared with People that “Charles' mother plays his mom in the show,” pointing to scenes where Charles Melton’s character, Austin, is shown speaking with his mother over the phone.

“She got in that ADR [Automated Dialogue Replacement] booth and gave a performance of a lifetime,” Lee said. “She was taking direction, she was changing up, she was giving different levels. I was like, ‘Oh, the apple doesn't fall far.'”

For a quick refresher, season one of Beef followed Danny Cho (Steven Yeun), a struggling contractor, and Amy Lau (Ali Wong), a high-achieving entrepreneur, whose lives spiral out of control after a road rage incident. What starts as petty anger quickly escalates into a destructive obsession that upends both of their worlds.

Season two, however, takes a different route entirely.

The new storyline begins when a Gen Z couple unexpectedly witnesses a heated and escalating argument between a millennial boss and his wife. Country club employees Ashley (Cailee Spaeny) and Austin (Melton) quickly get pulled into the drama between general manager Josh (Oscar Isaac) and his wife Lindsay (Carey Mulligan).

What starts as uncomfortable proximity turns into manipulation, favors, and shifting loyalties, all circling around the club’s powerful billionaire owner, Chairwoman Park (Youn Yuh-jung).

Beef season two is streaming now on Netflix.
