Attention, ‘Luther’ Fans! Netflix Drops First Trailer for New Movie ‘The Fallen Sun’

After a four-year hiatus, Idris Elba is reprising one of his most iconic roles: DCI John Luther.

Netflix just released the first official trailer for the all-new follow-up movie, titled Luther: The Fallen Sun. The 50-year-old actor will return as the British cop who stops at nothing to seek revenge—even if it means breaking out of prison.

In the trailer, Luther (Elba) is behind bars after the events in the season five finale. After a jailhouse brawl gone awry, he’s able to escape the prison and go undercover. Despite his “wanted” status, Luther is determined to finish what he started.

“I need to stop this man,” he says in the clip. “I’m still a copper.” Unfortunately, the police don’t agree with this strategy. “If you refuse to stand down, Tactical Unit will shoot you dead,” Odette Raine (Cynthia Erivo) adds.

The new movie will feature some familiar faces—like Dermot Crawley (Martin Schenk)—along with some new ones—like Erivo and Andy Serkis.

Luther originally premiered in 2010 and ran for five successful seasons before ending in 2019. (FYI, it was nominated for 11 Emmy Awards, including three for Outstanding Miniseries or TV Movie.) Shortly after the series finale aired on Netflix, Elba teased the possibility of continuing the story, but he didn’t confirm the news until September 2021.
