Jim Carrey Just Teased the Return of This Iconic Character in Upcoming Super Bowl Ad

Did someone call for a cable guy?

Verizon released a teaser ad that featured Jim Carrey reprising his character from the 1996 comedy film, The Cable Guy. In the original film, the actor played Chip Douglas, a cable guy who yearns to have a person to call his “buddy.”

The new 10-second clip shows the actor wearing a navy blue suit and adjusting his brown tool belt. In classic Chip fashion, he uses a lint roller to brush over the work badge on his jumpsuit, reading “The Cable 00.” The camera pans up to Carrey holding a power drill in the air while standing under a spotlight.

The ad ends with the date of kick-off night and the Verizon logo. The full commercial will debut on the night of the Super Bowl. Andrew McKechnie, who is the Verizon CCO and SV, recently sat down with AdWeek and revealed Carrey’s initial response to reprising the titular character in the commercial.

“Carrey was pretty psyched to do this and felt like this was the right time — you can't get a better moment than the Super Bowl to do something like this,” McKechnie explained. “Hopefully, when the viewers see it, it will feel like a great story both from a cultural standpoint and, in terms of 25 years later, what The Cable Guy ultimately represents.”

Carrey is not the only Hollywood celebrity making a special cameo in a Super Bowl commercial this year. Thus far, we’ve seen Scarlett Johannson and her husband Colin Jost in the viral Alexa ad, Zendaya selling seashells by the seashore, Doja Cat showcasing her singing skills and so much more.

We can’t help but feel a bit nostalgic over the return of Chip.
