This Action Drama on Prime Video Is Brilliant & No One Is Talking About It

A must-see for Easter

House of David
Jonathan Prime/Prime Video

I've been devouring my fair share of Easter-themed content lately, from Journey to Bethlehem and Jesus Revolution to Seong-ho Jang's recent animated film, King of Kings. But there's one inspiring title that seems to have slipped under the radar, even though it drew 22 million viewers in less than three weeks, soared to the second spot on Prime Video's most-watched list and quickly got renewed for season two.

Allow me to introduce House of David, which refers to the lineage through which Jesus of Nazareth descended. Set in 1000 BC, the historical drama depicts the story of a young shepherd and outcast who goes up against a Philistine giant and eventually becomes the king of ancient Israel. It's compelling, thought-provoking and easily one of the most riveting adaptations I've ever seen.

Now, I ought to mention that this is not an accurate historical account, and the show makes this clear from the beginning. A lot (and I mean a lot) of creative liberties are taken and backstories are fabricated for added drama and suspense. So, if you're looking for a biblical narrative that stays true to all the facts, you won't find that here. However, those who know the full story will appreciate many aspects that do reflect what truly happened, and those who are unfamiliar will be thoroughly entertained. Here's why you should consider adding this show to your Easter playlist.

1. It's Not Cringy

I've noticed that many people are hesitant to watch Easter content that focuses on biblical narratives, and quite frankly, I can see why. In fact, one of my big frustrations is seeing how some of the most fascinating Bible stories are so badly executed. Titles like Noah’s Ark and Joseph & Mary do a huge disservice to the material they're based on, thanks mainly to mediocre scripts with preachy undertones and bad acting. But guys, I promise this isn't the case with House of David. For once, the production quality is top-notch. And from the get-go, viewers are immersed in that time period as they experience what David goes through, from the tension with his father to that terrifying first encounter with the lion.

2. Michael Iskander Is Fantastic

For the record, when it comes to great depictions of David, I look to Nathaniel Parker—who starred as the biblical figure in the 1997 drama, David—as the gold standard. Now that I've seen House of David, I can say that Iskander comes in at a close second. Both actors successfully add depth to one of the most famous and complex characters, making him relatable rather than a distant superhero or religious caricature. Iskander truly embodies David's courage and strength, balancing those qualities with his vulnerability and meekness. For instance, it's hard to miss the sting of rejection as he's disrespected and neglected by his family, but he's sustained by his unwavering faith. Plus, it's intriguing to see how he shifts from fighting off a lion to peacefully playing his harp and tending to his sheep.

3. It Tackles Universal Themes

The show deftly explores themes like loss, family dynamics, destiny and faith. But what I really love about this show is how it juxtaposes David's faithfulness and humility with King Saul's pride and hunger for control. It sheds light on how leadership and power can corrupt a person's morals, which is seen as Saul becomes unhinged after a disturbing confrontation with the prophet, Samuel. I also like that the series doesn't shy away from the difficulties and temptations that David faces, pointing to his resilience and dependence on God.

Season one of House of David is now available to stream on Prime Video.
