Emma Thompson Is Completely Unrecognizable as Miss Trunchbull in Netflix’s New ‘Matilda the Musical’ Trailer

Gather around, children: The official trailer for Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical has been released by Netflix. In this new iteration of the classic tale, actress Emma Thompson takes on the role of the sinister headmistress, Miss Trunchbull. (And her striking appearance made us do a double take.)

The two-minute teaser starts with Matilda (Alisha Weir) planning to escape her terrible home life. Then, we’re transported to the school grounds of Crunchem Hall, where her nice teacher, Miss Honey (Lashana Lynch), learns of the young girl’s special abilities. Cut to Miss Trunchbull taunting one of the students—and Matilda stands up to her.

“That’s not right!” she yells.

Some iconic moments from the original film (and book) are teased throughout the trailer, such as Miss Trunchbull swinging a little girl by the pigtails or her forcing a student to eat an entire chocolate cake.

The classic movie adaptation debuted in 1996, with young actress Mara Wilson playing the titular character. However, this version is directed by Matthew Warchus (who brought the musical to Broadway) and will premiere in selected theaters and on the streaming service.

Thompson, Weir and Lynch are just some of the performers in the ensemble cast. The movie also features Stephen Graham (Boiling Point), Andrea Riseborough (Oblivion) and Sindhu Vee.
