Denzel Washington Was Just Majorly Snubbed for a *Third* Time (I Think)

First the BAFTAs, then the Oscars and now this?!

For a theater nerd such as myself, the arrival of the Tony Award nominations is more exciting than finding out who is playing in the Super Bowl (Travis Kelce, who?). As expected, Audra and Nicole will duke it out for Best Actress in a Musical. But the Best Actor in a Play category? One name was…missing.

Denzel Washington is currently starring on Broadway in the title role of Othello opposite Jake Gyllenhaal. The show is one of the hottest tickets in town…meaning ticket prices are astronomical. This also means I haven’t seen it.

Many theatergoers are complaining that Washington was snubbed by not receiving a nomination for his portrayal of the tragic Shakespearean figure. Do I agree with them? All I can say is, probably?

Washington’s performance is no doubt incredible—I love every one of his roles whether in a thriller or a high drama. But with tickets to the show so prohibitive to the Average Joe, I can only speculate if he, in fact, should have been included in the Best Actor roundup alongside George Clooney (who I also can’t afford to see), Cole Escola (who is sure to win), Jon Michael Hill, Daniel Dae Kim, Harry Lennix and Louis McCartney.

If indeed he was snubbed, it would make the third time this year. Denzel Washington made headlines earlier this year because he was snubbed by the BAFTAs for Gladiator II. Although I had high hopes for an Oscar nomination, the actor wasn’t included in the Best Supporting Actor category.

I guess there’s always next year, Denzel? At least you aren’t in Redwood…
