Wholesome K-dramas FTW

It‘s been three years since I first dipped my toes into the K-drama scene, and after binging countless heartwarming South Korean shows, I can confidently say it’s been one of the most delightful (and unexpected) turns in my TV-watching journey.

Titles like Business Proposal, Reply 1988 and Crash Landing on You have helped me unwind on stressful days. But this time, I want to draw your attention a delightfully quirky rom-com on Netflix that currently holds a perfect 100 percent rating on Rotten TomatoesCrash Course in Romance.

The series follows Nam Haeng-seon (Jeon Do-yeon), a restaurant owner and single mom who gets off on the wrong foot with a mystery guy she crosses paths with. Unbeknownst to Haeng-seon, this mystery guy is Choi Chi-yeol (Jung Kyung-ho), a hot-shot celebrity instructor who teaches a competitive math course that her daughter really wants to get into. And in another fun twist, Chi-yeol becomes obsessed with Haeng-seon's food after he tries it for the first time, not knowing that the restaurant's owner is the same woman he came across.

As you could imagine, the scenario leads to awkward encounters, plenty of bickering and, eventually, an unlikely love story. Here's why it's worth your time.

1. The Main Characters Are Middle-Aged

Nearly every romantic K-drama I've seen so far (from Twenty-Five, Twenty-One to Love Next Door) revolves around a younger couple, with older characters typically sidelined. But in this case, there's a budding romance between a middle-aged professor and a hard-working mother who gave up her future as a pro athlete to care for her daughter.

It's incredibly refreshing to see a relationship develop between older, wiser, well-rounded people, especially when they have such different personalities. Yes, they have their flaws, and they don't have every aspect of their lives figured out, but there's a level of maturity that's added to this unlikely pairing because they've gone through some things. And it's amazing to see how they evolve as they continue to support each other. Which brings me to my next point...

2. Jeon Do-yeon and Jung Kyung-ho

The main characters felt so authentic, thanks to Jeon and Jung's brilliant performances. For instance, I could almost feel the weight of responsibility on Chi-yeol's shoulders as he tried to maintain his public image while struggling with his health privately. And as for Haeng-seon, her passion and tenacity are awe-inspiring, even as she spearheads her business, cares for her younger brother and plans for her daughter's entrance exams.

Considering the depth these actors added to their respective roles, it's no wonder their chemistry was off the charts. (Honestly, all it takes is a lingering gaze to make me swoon.)

3. It Explores the Pressures of Korea's Education System

This is a huge ongoing theme in the series, and as someone who grew up believing that my academic success determined my worth, I'd say this hit pretty close to home.

The series sheds light on some of the harsh realities that students deal with, like comparison due to competitive scoring, pressure from their parents to get the top grades and long hours of extra tutoring. It's so clear that these things take a huge mental and emotional toll on the students, but it's especially fascinating to see the ripple effects of this system on their family and friendships.

For example, it's considered normal for moms to race to the location of their kids' academy classes so they can secure the best seats. And then there are students with strict parents who expect them to meet impossible standards to ensure a successful career. It's a heartbreaking reminder of how flawed the education system can be, and I like that it raises valid questions about how society defines success.

TL;DR? If you're looking for a heartwarming film with incredible acting and some interesting cultural takeaways, check out Crash Course in Romance on Netflix ASAP.
