As a mystery lover who is constantly refreshing the Netflix app to see what’s new on the platform, I’m always on the lookout for a gritty movie or television show that is going to get my wheels turning. The latest addition to my watchlist is Brick, a German psychological thriller starring Matthias Schweighöfer, Ruby O. Fee, and Frederick Lau, which has quickly risen to the fourth spot on Netflix’s top ten list. The general storyline, you ask? Well, it involves a brick wall. No, seriously, a mysterious brick wall is at the forefront here, as a couple wakes up to find their apartment building mysteriously sealed off by an impenetrable wall, leaving the residents to figure out why they are trapped and how to escape.

As a claustrophobic person myself, situations like this are literally my worst nightmare, which means I will be torturing myself by giving this movie a watch, especially after seeing the heart-racing trailer that shows the residents panicking while also trying to figure out a solution to their horrifying problem.

While the 35 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating may be a cause for concern, audience members seem to have a different opinion of the film, with one reviewer writing, “Brick is a sharp, stylish noir set in a high school, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt delivering a strong, brooding performance. The fast, cryptic dialogue and dense mystery make it unique, but it can be confusing. It’s a clever, moody film best suited for noir fans.” Another 5-star audience member adds, “This was actually a very good movie, full of suspense, emotions and not easily predictable. Well done to the actors and producers. Would love a second Brick movie to be released. Do yourself a favour and watch this movie.”

Okay, I’m definitely making this my weekend watch.

You can stream Brick now on Netflix.
