Week 3 (5/23 - 5/29)

Turn Up the Volume

Blame limp, flat locks on humidity and heat (and letting hair air-dry for the past 12 months since we have nowhere to be). When you need to turn up the volume this summer, try a post-shower mousse, like Bumble and bumble Thickening Full Form Soft Mousse, that gives hair bounce and shine while also adding moisture before styling. Next, reach for the Hot Tools Gold One Step Blowout that wraps strands around charcoal-infused bristles and plates using 24K gold technology for even heat distribution, added root volume and effortlessly curled ends.

Hair Tip #3: For straightening natural hair, use a tool with multiple heat settings—like the Croc Nano Black Titan Iron—and dial it to the lowest heat setting possible that will still be effective (yes, even if you have to go over each section a few times). Finish with a hydrating serum to keep flyaways at bay and prevent frizz from forming.

Week 2 (5/16 - 5/22)

STEP OUT IN STYLE

It’s summer, which means reaching for a hot hair tool before stepping out in 90-degree heat sounds like a recipe for brittle strands. Thankfully, modern styling solutions are all about adding moisture back in. The Bio Ionic 10X Pro Straightening & Styling Iron emits negative ions that drive water molecules deep into the hair, hydrating and conditioning while giving locks a vibrant shine. Or, reach for the Drybar 3 Day Bender Curling Iron to create curls and waves in half the time of a traditional curling iron. Less time in under the heat = no sweat (literally).

Hair Tip #2: Use a detangler that also offers heat protection, like Living Proof Restore Perfecting Spray to moisturize and strengthen dry strands. Spray it on damp (not wet) hair while focusing on the shafts and ends of the hair, then comb it through with a paddle brush for an even application.

Week 1 (5/9 - 5/15)

First Stop: Hydration Station

Between the sun, the pool, the beach and the heat, your locks are longing for moisture all summer. Try out a conditioning cream, like Curlsmith Condition Oil-in-Cream that moisturizes, hydrates and adds shine to curls, twist-outs or braids without ever feeling greasy, crunchy or flaky. Or, let your shower do all the leg work with Pureology Hydrate Sheer Shampoo, a super lightweight shampoo that’s sulfate- and silicone-free and hydrates dry, fine and color-treated hair.

Hair Tip #1: Whether you’re touching up your roots or switching up your overall hair color, our beauty editor says to reach for a box of dye that doesn’t include common harmful chemicals, like Madison Reed Radiant Haircolor Kit, which is 6-free (no ammonia, parabens, resorcinol, PPD, phthalates or gluten in the formula).
