‘This Is Us’ Fans Have a Troubling Theory About Kate

*Warning: Spoilers ahead*

In This Is Us season four, episode three, Kate (Chrissy Metz) learns that Toby (Chris Sullivan) has secretly been doing CrossFit over his lunch breaks. Although deep down she knows it’s great that her husband, who suffered a heart attack last season, is taking care of himself for her and their son Jack’s sake, she can’t help but feel angry. The dishonesty, of course, troubles her, but it’s really her own insecurities about her weight that cause the most tension.

When Kate reacts negatively to Toby’s weight loss, he reminds her he needs to maintain a healthy weight, so he doesn’t die from another heart attack. Kate, unfortunately, takes this as an affront about her own weight and suggests that he thinks she might die prematurely because of her overeating. She storms out of the room, but the damage has been done.

Later, Kate apologizes to Toby about her reaction and opts to go on a walk with her neighbor to get the ball moving in the right direction.

But some This Is Us fans couldn’t help but wonder if Kate saying she could die from a heart attack was foreshadowing on the writers’ part. After all, Kate was mysteriously absent from the season three finale fast-forward scene and Toby seemed hesitant to join the rest of the Pearson family. At the time, some speculated that he and Kate could ultimately divorce, but could the situation be more ominous? We sure hope not, but something tells us we won’t know for a long time.

This Is Us returns with season four, episode four next Tuesday, October 15, at 9 p.m. PT/ET.
