We finally have confirmation about the very mysterious project that has been hinted at for months: Rihanna and Donald Glover, who also goes by his stage name Childish Gambino, are making a movie together.
Last August, we speculated they were working on a secret collab in Cuba after pictures of the two surfaced. Now, we’ve gotten word from The Hollywood Reporter that this movie, titled Guava Island and helmed by “This Is America” music video and HBO’s Barry director Hiro Murai, will debut at Coachella Music Festival tonight.
But don’t worry, non-festival goers. You can watch the RiRi-starring film from the comfort of your couch this Saturday. Guava Island will be available to stream for free for 18 hours beginning at 3:01 a.m. EST on Saturday, April 13, on Amazon Prime via the link amazon.com/guavaisland. Yep, no Prime membership required.
Amazon’s synopsis of the film is “an expansion of Glover’s idea of freedom” in “creative and business terms,” according to THR. In a teaser of the film posted to Instagram, Glover and Rihanna are dancing together. In another scene, Rihanna is wearing a hot-pink-and-orange striped dress and matching headscarf…and this movie might just be added to our summer mood board because we are feeling these vibes.
According to Vanity Fair, the film is “a tropical thriller” in which Glover portrays a local musician who is determined to throw a festival for his island community (and we just hope he’s not taking a cue from Fyre Festival…). The film is “inspired by Fernando Meirelles’s Brazilian crime drama City of God and Prince’s Purple Rain.”
It’s written by Glover’s brother, Stephen Glover, who also writes for Glover’s hit FX show Atlanta.
Letitia Wright of Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Ready Player One and The Commuter also stars in the clandestine movie, along with Nonso Anozie, who played the traitorous Xaro Xhoan Daxos on Game of Thrones.
Guess this means we found love in a hopeless place…on our couch, constantly refreshing the Amazon Prime link at 3 a.m., obvi.
