Elizabeth Holmes (author of HRH: So Many Thoughts on Royal Style) is settling an age-old debate: Which royal family member has the most influential style?
On a recent episode of the Royally Obsessed podcast, Holmes chatted with hosts Rachel Bowie and Roberta Fiorito about the most fashionable royal of time: Princess Diana.
“If I had to choose a favorite, it would definitely be Diana,” she said. “I hope people delight in the ways she delighted in fashion.”
Holmes also explained how Princess Diana impacted the new generation of royals, adding, “Learning about her fashion and the very distinct phases in which she used it and found power in it, it was this real light bulb moment for me. What Diana did is infuse the fashion element into it and make it something that was emotional, too. I think she primed us all for caring about royal fashion in a new way. It makes so much more sense now, like when Kate hit the scene, people immediately were like, ‘Oh, what is she wearing? And can I buy it?’”
The royal expert also confirmed that Princess Diana set the stage for the Middleton effect. “Suddenly there was this whole economic power around it, and it’s just grown and grown since then,” Holmes continued. “So, I think we all have to credit Princess Diana for what she did to royal fashion forever.”
