Kate Middleton’s Cousin-in-Law Mike Tindall Had *This* Reaction to Her Rugby Skills

Kate Middleton is sporty, this we know. But when she paid a visit to Twickenham Stadium in early February and participated in a basic training session with England’s rugby team—a royal duty related to her recently assigned role as patron of the Rugby Football Union and Rugby Football League—our mouths dropped. Her athleticism as she demonstrated a line-out play (when a player gets hoisted into the air to receive a ball after it goes out of bounds) was next-level.

Apparently, we weren’t the only ones who thought so.

On this week’s episode of the Royally Obsessed podcast, my co-host Roberta Fiorito and I discuss Kate’s cousin-in-law Mike Tindall—who’s married to Princess Anne’s daughter Zara and happens to be a former English rugby union player—and his reaction to Kate’s appearance on the field, as shared on his weekly podcast The Good, the Bad & the Rugby.

The conversation kicked off after Mike’s co-host Alex Payne teased him and their other co-host James Haskell, also a former player, about their skills in comparison to Kate’s: “She looks a more natural rugby player than both of you put together.”

Mike laughed and chimed in from there, revealing not only his efforts to tease his cousin-in-law post-event, but also the fact that the royal cousins keep in touch via WhatsApp. “I text Ellis [Genge] and said, ‘Mate, please tell me anything she messed up,’ so I could sort of...family WhatsApp group, get to her. And he said, ‘No, she was actually pretty good, and she was really good at kicking,’ and I was like [sigh]. But she has this competitive nature.”

Mike, in conversation with his co-hosts, goes on to compliment Kate, specifically her mid-air catch: “Just imagine, anyone who’s ever tried it, getting thrown up in the line-out if you’ve never done it before, it’s not easy, because normally, you’ll kick the prop in either the nuts or the face as he’s lifting you, and she just looked effortless.”

Bottom line: We weren’t the only ones impressed by Kate’s prowess on the rugby field. Now, about that WhatsApp family chat...
