Markle had Williams’s mom, Oracene Price, on her right, along with the tennis player’s coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, on her left side. The duchess was also surrounded by several familiar faces, including the athlete’s husband Alexis Ohanian, publicist Jill Smoller, Vogue editor Anna Wintour and Williams’s two sisters, Isha Price and Venus.
During the match, Williams lost to Bianca Andreescu, a 19-year-old athlete from Canada. Andreescu defeated Williams in the first two sets, with a final score of 6-3 and 7-5.
The match was a big deal, since Williams only needs one more “W” to tie Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles. However, it wasn’t a total upset, since she hasn’t had a first place showing since giving birth to her daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian, in September 2017.
After the match, Williams told reporters that she didn’t play as hard as Andreescu. “I love Bianca, I think she’s a great girl, but I think this is the worst match I’ve played all tournament. And it’s hard to know that you could do better,” she said, according to People. “It’s inexcusable for me to play at that level.”
On the bright side, Markle was in good company.
