HBO Just Dropped the New ‘Big Little Lies’ Season 2 Trailer, and Monterey Gives Meryl a Run for Her Money

HBO warmed us up for the season-eight premiere of Game of Thrones with a brand-new Big Little Lies season-two trailer and release date.

On June 9, fans will return to Monterey for the premiere of the sophomore season of Big Little Lies with seven episodes, a new director and a fab new addition: Meryl Streep (although we already knew that). The streaming service dropped a brand-new trailer over the weekend, and we finally got a good, long glimpse of Mary Louise Wright (Streep), the mother of the deceased Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgård). It seems her son’s death isn’t going to be swept under the rug so easily.

Streep’s Mary Louise joins Madeline Martha Mackenzie (Reese Witherspoon), Celeste Wright (Nicole Kidman), Renata Klein (Laura Dern), Jane Chapman (Shailene Woodley) and Bonnie Carlson (Zoë Kravitz), aka the “Monterey Five.”

According to HBO, season two “explores the malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting. Relationships will fray, loyalties will erode…and the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom.” Dun dun dun.

The show was originally meant for a one-season run with the plot of the novel by Liane Moriarty all tied up by the twist finale. Season two will continue to follow the housewives of Monterey, California, after the surprise ending. Citing fans’ calls for the show to continue, Kidman said the network reconsidered.

Season two premieres on June 9, 2019. (If we can all survive the Game of Thrones finale, that is...)
