So, what happened? Last year, Encanto debuted in theaters on Thanksgiving Day. But, the movie achieved more global success after premiering on Disney+ shortly after (on Christmas Eve to be exact).
When the deadline for Oscar nominations came around, (which was on November 15), the team had no idea that “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” would be sooo loved by listeners. Instead, they chose to submit “Dos Oruguitas” for the Best Original Song category.
When it was announced that “Dos Oruguitas” was nominated instead of “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” fans were left scratching their heads. Last month, songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda made a special appearance on the Elvis Duran Show and explained why they chose to submit “Dos Oruguitas” instead.
“When you submit a song for consideration, I always think the song you submit is not about whether you win or not, it’s about the one that best exemplifies the spirit of the movie itself,” he explained. “That's always the guiding principle. And for us, ‘Dos Oruguitas’ is the foundational story. It’s a song I’m really proud of. It's one of the only songs I’ve ever written that made my wife cry. And so I’m really proud to enter that into consideration.”
