It's Official: ‘Yellowstone’ Is Getting a Spin-Off with Matthew McConaughey

Yellowstone fans, we have some great (and not so great) news. But first, we'll start with the less exciting news.

In case you missed it, Deadline previously reported that co-creator and showrunner Taylor Sheridan and the Paramount Network may end Yellowstone after season five. (As of right now, there hasn’t been an official report confirming the news.)

However, on the positive side, fans haven’t seen the last of the Yellowstone universe and its characters, because in addition to the two prequels (1883 and 1923), a new spinoff series is officially in the works—and actor Matthew McConaughey is officially joining the cast.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount president and CEO Chris McCarthy confirmed that the Dallas Buyers Club star is "lined up to star in a Yellowstone extension," which will premiere "regardless of whether Costner returns to the original." According to the outlet, this is just one of ten projects that McCarthy has with Sheridan.

As for Kevin Costner (who plays John Dutton), his return to Yellowstone is questionable due to issues issues with the shooting schedule. Per Deadline, the actor wants to limit himself to just one week of filming for the remaining episodes of season five, which is set to premiere this summer

At the moment, Costner is currently directing and starring in a new western project called Horizon. Deadline also reported that the network declined Costner’s limited schedule request and made the decision to move on with the proposed spinoff series.

A spokesman from Paramount Network told the outlet, “We have no news to report. Kevin Costner is a big part of Yellowstone and we hope that’s the case for a long time to come. Thanks to the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan, we are always working on franchise expansions of this incredible world he has built. Matthew McConaughey is a phenomenal talent with whom we’d love to partner.”

While we're excited to see a McConaughey spinoff, we really hope the Costner series finds a way to keep on trucking too.
