A New Reality Competition Show Based on ‘Squid Game’ Is Currently in the Works at Netflix

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to participate in a real-life Squid Game? If you’ve asked yourself this question on numerous occasions, then listen up.

This week, the streaming service announced the South Korean survival series is getting its own reality competition show! While the contestants won’t be tasked with fighting to the death, a total of 456 players will compete in a series of games to win a grand prize of $4.56 million. (Whoa, that’s A LOT of dough.)

On this week’s episode of PureWow's weekly entertainment podcast, Stream On, hosts Phil Mutz and Rachel Gulmi give their hot take on the new series (and respond to some ridiculous fan reactions) at the 6:50 mark in the new podcast episode below.

Netflix released a casting video on all of their social media platforms, encouraging interested candidates to apply and join the show. The caption read, “What will your number be? Sign up for Squid Game: The Challenge on SquidGameCasting.com.”

Brandon Riegg, who is the Netflix VP of Unscripted and Documentary Series, shared his excitement for the project in a public statement. “Squid Game took the world by storm with [director Hwang Dong-hyuk’s] captivating story and iconic imagery,” he said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

He continued, “We’re grateful for his support as we turn the fictional world into reality in this massive competition and social experiment. Fans of the drama series are in for a fascinating and unpredictable journey as our 456 real-world contestants navigate the biggest competition series ever, full of tension and twists, with the biggest-ever cash prize at the end.”

This comes a few days after the platform announced Squid Game season two is officially happening. The teaser clip revealed the return of the animatronic doll, known as Younghee. The number “2” appears in the eyeball, signaling a second season is coming. In the background, the infamous “Red Light Green Light” song is being sung in Korean.
