We’re Officially Getting a ‘Downton Abbey 2’ & We Only Have to Wait Until Christmas

Calling all Downton Abbey fans: it looks like it’s going to be quite the Christmas this year. Focus Features just officially announced that the film is getting a sequel, and it’s already in production.

The company revealed the news in a press release on Monday, even providing some essential details about the project. According to the release, the original cast will be returning for the sequel as well as a few new faces including Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock (White Lines), Nathalie Baye (Catch Me if You Can) and Dominic West (The Affair).

Julian Fellowes (who created the TV show) will once again pen the script while Gareth Neame and Liz Trubridge are returning to produce. In addition, Simon Curtis (My Week with Marilyn) has signed on to direct the film.

“After a very challenging year with so many of us separated from family and friends, it is a huge comfort to think that better times are ahead and that next Christmas we will be reunited with the much-beloved characters of Downton Abbey,” Neame said in a statement.

ICYMI: The initial film, which was released in September 2019, followed a royal visit to the Crawley family and Downton staff from the King and Queen of England and ended with a ball fitting for the royal family.

The original cast includes Henry Talbot (Matthew Goode), Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery), Lady Cora (Elizabeth McGovern), the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith), Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael), Anna Bates (Joanne Froggatt), John Bates (Brendan Coyle) and the Earl of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville).

And while we don’t have any plot details yet or a name, we’re assuming the film will pick up where the first movie ended. Luckily, we only have to wait until December 22, 2021, to find out.
