6 Ways to Help Those Affected By Hurricane Ian

Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic are still recovering from Hurricane Fiona—and now, another disaster has struck.

Thousands of Floridians were forced to flee their homes as Hurricane Ian approached Category 5 status before making landfall on the state’s west coast. The extent of the damage is still unknown, but one thing’s for sure: The victims need our help.

We compiled a list of six ways to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian. Since the victims’ needs will likely change as the storm passes, please use these picks as a starting point to begin your own deeper research.

1. American Red Cross

American Red Cross is currently accepting donations to help those affected by Hurricane Ian. You can choose your donation amount, but the minimum is $10.

2. Salvation Army Hurricane Relief

The official website reads, “From Florida to Puerto Rico, The Salvation Army is there to provide food, drinks, shelter, emotional and spiritual care and other emergency services to hurricane survivors and rescue workers.”

3. Florida Disaster Fund

The state has launched the Florida Disaster Fund to aid response and recovery efforts during Hurricane Ian. You can donate online, send a check or text “disaster” to 20222.

4. Project HOPE

The non-profit organization is distributing water, medicine and other supplies to those affected by Hurricane Ian. The charity's main focus is on the elderly and other vulnerable communities.

5. Children's Emergency Fund

The fund is run by Save the Children, and it’s geared toward providing kid-focused supplies to victims. “Children are always among the most vulnerable when disaster strikes, and our thoughts and hearts go out to kids and families in the pathway of this dangerous storm," response team leader Barbara Ammirati said in a statement.

6. PayPal’s Hurricane Ian Relief Campaign 

The campaign is “raising funds for charities that are providing resources and assistance to affected areas.”
