In the trailer, we’re introduced to Tuca and Bertie, two best friends who live in the same apartment building. They’re relatable, sassy and just so happen to be birds.
The project came to fruition after series creator Lisa Hanawalt (Bojack Horseman) saw Haddish in Girls Trip. “I saw her in Girls Trip and just fell in love with her. It was the funniest movie I had seen in years, and I watched it, and I just thought, ‘Oh, my God. She’s such a Tuca,’” she says in the clip.
Although Tuca & Bertie is animated, Hanawalt confirmed the characters are surprisingly relatable, adding, “These are real characters. This is about a friendship between 30-year-old birdwomen. I want women in the real world to relate to it, even though they’re not bird people.”
According to Wong, she couldn’t say no to the project once she read the script. “It was so much weirder and funnier than anything I could have ever imagined,” she says. “But it felt like a true collaboration.”
Consider us convinced. Tuca & Bertie will hit Netflix on May 3.
