The New ‘This Is Us’ Season 4 Trailer Includes 10 (!) Never-Before-Seen Characters

It’s the This Is Us Big Three’s birthday and, just as the cast promised, a new surprise dropped that has us doing some long, hard thinking.

The brand-new season four trailer has arrived and it’s, well, pretty confusing. Now we get what the This Is Us season four poster meant when it read, “If you think you know what happens, you don’t know us,” because we really don’t know what’s happening in the forthcoming season.

A whole host of new characters has officially joined the hit NBC series and it’s unclear exactly how they fit into the Pearson family narrative. There’s Jennifer Morrison (Once Upon a Time) as a soldier, Marsha Stephanie Blake (When They See Us) as a mother, Omar Epps (Shooter) as an automotive specialist and Asante Blackk (When They See Us) as a young man about teenage Randall’s (Nigel Finch) age. Just watch.

But that’s not all. Bahara Golestani (Animal Kingdom), Timothy Omundson (American Housewife), Julian Silva (Queen of the South), Auden Thornton (Beauty Marks), Nick Wechsler (Shades of Blue) and M. Night Shyamalan (yes, the Oscar-nominated director of The Sixth Sense) are also along for the ride.

Of course, Mandy Moore (Rebecca) and Milo Ventimiglia (Jack) appear in the trailer, too, with Moore fortuitously saying, “It’s so strange, isn’t it? How just like that a complete stranger can become such a big part of your story.”

Ventimiglia did hint that “The world expands” in season four during a visit to Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, and series creator Dan Fogelman also teased that Jack will be less central to the plot, but this is a lot of change in one trailer.

Season four kicks off with an extended premiere at 9 p.m. on NBC on Tuesday, September 24. Let’s hope we get a better understanding of what the heck is going on with our favorite TV family.
