In this week’s major news, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are now big-time television producers. But, as it turns out, they aren’t the first (ex) members of the royal family to take on such a feat.
According to The New York Times, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have founded an unnamed production company and signed a major deal with Netflix. Per the report, the streaming service will pay the couple to make “documentaries, docu-series, feature films, scripted shows and children’s programming.” And yes, they may even make an appearance in front of the camera.
“Our lives, both independent of each other, and as a couple have allowed us to understand the power of the human spirit: of courage, resilience, and the need for connection. Through our work with diverse communities and their environments, to shining a light on people and causes around the world, our focus will be on creating content that informs but also gives hope,” the couple said in a statement. “As new parents, making inspirational family programming is also important to us, as is powerful storytelling through a truthful and relatable lens. We are pleased to work with Ted and the team at Netflix whose unprecedented reach will help us share impactful content that unlocks action.”
The couple is following in the footsteps (whether they knew it or not) of Queen Elizabeth’s youngest son, Prince Edward, who launched his own television and movie production company, Ardent Productions, in the early ’90s. However, we have a feeling the duke and duchess will have more success, considering the Earl of Wessex’s company only reported a profit one year before he left in 2002, according to People.
