When we caught up with Katz, who also counts Michelle Williams and Laura Dern as clients, she explained her simple trick for remembering to prioritize posture: “I always say clavicle up. Everyone’s always saying shoulders back or shoulders up, but you really want to lift from your clavicle.” (In case you need a reminder, your clavicle is your collarbone.)
“Posture is so important because it’s also a sign of our self-esteem,” she added. When our shoulders are rounded and we’re hunched forward, we don’t look confident. Conversely, when our head is held high and our, to borrow Katz’s mantra, clavicle is raised, we look like we’re ready to take on the day.
Katz notes that yoga is also immensely beneficial when it comes to posture because “it lengthens out those little muscles and helps to strengthen those supporting players instead of your quadriceps, hamstrings and all of those bigger muscle groups.”
