Prince Charles Paid Tribute to His ‘Mummy’ Queen Elizabeth with Moving Speech and Special Production

Last night during the Platinum Party at the Palace, Queen Elizabeth II was celebrated by everyone from Alicia Keys to Andrew Lloyd Webber. However, one of the most moving parts of the evening was when her eldest son, Prince Charles, got on stage to a make a speech honoring the legacy of his mother.

The Prince of Wales started off his speech by addressing his mother with her formal title, as well as a personal nickname. “Your Majesty, Mummy,” he said. “The scale of this evening’s celebration and the outpouring of warmth and affection over this whole Jubilee weekend is our way of saying thank you. Thank you from your family, the country, the Commonwealth, in fact the whole world.”

He continued by saying he wanted to pay tribute to his mother's lifetime of service by using words, pictures and lights (this was immediately followed by a ring of lights illuminating around the stadium and pictures of the queen flashed on giant screens during the prince's speech). The speech was shared in a video on the Clarence House Instagram account, as seen below.

Throughout the rest of the speech, Prince Charles talked about Queen Elizabeth's role as a mother, as well as a head of state, saying that she “[continues] to make history” as a leader.

He also noted the passing of his father, Prince Philip, saying, “Your strength and stay is much missed this evening, but I am sure he's here in spirit. My papa would have enjoyed the show and joined us wholeheartedly in celebrating all you continue to do for your country and your people.”

Royal followers showed their love for the speech in the comments, like one user who said, “What a magnificent celebration!” Another wrote, “Beautiful heartfelt speech.”

Well said, Prince Charles.
