Prince Charles is apparently just like every other wedding guest—up here making song requests. In this case, unlike your dad asking the DJ play "Free Bird," Charles had some thoughts for the royal orchestra at Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding, natch.
During a recent radio interview on Classic FM, the Prince of Wales expressed his love of classical music and revealed that it actually allowed him to contribute a small (but sweet) part to his oldest son’s 2011 wedding because it meant he could suggest a few pieces to play during the wedding. "I hope [my music suggestions] gave some people pleasure, but it’s rather fun having orchestras in for great occasions like that, and why not suggest a few pieces occasionally? Anyway...I do enjoy it."
So how did this adoration for classical music play out at Will and Kate’s wedding? While we can only guess which compositions that made the cut were at Prince Charles’s suggestion, we do know what was on that matrimonial playlist. According to Spruce, before the ceremony began, guests were serenaded by a selection of organ pieces by Sebastian Bach, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, to name a few. They were followed by orchestral songs including "Farewell to Stromness," "Touch Her Soft Lips and Part," and "Romance for String Orchestra Op.11" which was dedicated to Prince Charles and Camilla’s own wedding.
