Lilly Singh Shares Her Must-Have Beauty Product (and Her Best Career Advice)

If you don’t know Lilly Singh yet, it’s only a matter of time before you do. As the only female host of a late-night show on a major network (NBC), the former YouTube personality has already made headlines—and we get the feeling that she’s just getting started.

Case in point: She’s starring in Olay’s upcoming Super Bowl commercial alongside Taraji P. Henson, Busy Philipps, Katie Couric and retired astronaut Nicole Stott. To celebrate her partnership with the iconic brand, PureWow talked to Singh about her must-have beauty product, earliest beauty memories and career advice for anyone who is looking to follow in her footsteps.

1. What Is Your Must-have Beauty Product?

The one thing Singh has on her at all times is “some form of lip balm,” she told PureWow. “I don’t know what it is, but I can’t stand the feeling of my lips being chapped or dry, so I’m constantly putting on balm. Maybe it’s a nervous tic? Or a subconscious thing? Either way, I have a balm in my car, in my backpack, on my nightstand...everywhere I go, there is balm,” Singh told PureWow. (Same, Lilly, same.)

2. What Is Your Earliest Beauty Memory?

“I didn’t really start getting into beauty and makeup until I was in high school, and even then, I was completely clueless,” says Singh. “One of my earliest memories involves going to my best friend’s house before school. I would wake up extra early to go there so she could straighten my hair with an iron. I would lie on the floor while she flattened my hair, which is definitely not advisable in hindsight.”

3. Do You Have Any Advice For Aspiring Hosts Or Young Women Who Want To Follow In Your Footsteps?

“People are often curious about how I got to where I am...how I made a career out of YouTube and have partnered with a company like Olay. A lot of times, they want specific answers about how to use social media or videos or industry secrets, but what’s not talked about enough is what really goes into my work or what it takes for any successful person to get to where they are, and honestly, it’s being nice,” explains Singh. “My biggest mantra for work is ‘Work hard and be nice to people,’ so if I could ever give any advice to a young person, it would be that. You could be the most talented person in the world and have a whole bunch of skills, but at the end of the day, you work with people. If you’re not nice to people and you don’t have compassion for them, you’ll never truly connect to anyone, which is a crucial part of being successful in anything.”
