Kensington Palace Shares Throwback Photo of Kate Looking Casual in Jeans at Last Year’s Chelsea Flower Show

We're quite used to seeing Kate Middleton wearing floral frocks, Breton stripes, even the occasional athleisure ensemble, but sneakers, jeans and a messy bun? Not since her college days! Yet that's exactly what the duchess is sporting in the latest Instagram post from Kensington Palace.

The official royal social media account posted a throwback photo of Middleton hard at work in the ‘Back to Nature’ garden during 2019’s Chelsea Flower Show. Middleton's horticultural project—a garden designed to highlight the physical and mental benefits of nature for those of all ages—debuted during the annual five-day event. And while the general public was treated to photos of the Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Queen Elizabeth enjoying the fruits of her and her fellow compatriots’ work, images of her getting down and dirty in the weeds were few and far between.

Middleton has proven herself multiple times to be a woman of many talents, acting as a semi-professional photographer for her family, consistently beating her husband in tennis and now gardener extraordinaire. While this very casual getup is not in line with her typical vibe for public appearances, she still looks infinitely more put together than we do when we garden.

Queen Elizabeth and various members of the royal family attend the Chelsea Flower Show every year (going all the way back to Queen Mary's inaugural visit in 1916), although the 2020 show is set to be very different from all other years due to social distancing protocols. For the first time ever, the garden event will be held entirely online.

Of course, this didn't stop QEII from acknowledging and celebrating the launch of the event. Her social media team took to Instagram to share some throwback photos of their own, this time showcasing the queen touring the gardens throughout the 1950's. There was also a post dedicated to the queen's favorite flower, the Lily-of-the-Valley, alongside a caption encouraging others to share their most-loved plants.

While we'll certainly miss seeing what gorgeous ensembles Middleton had planned for her usual summer engagements—the Royal Windsor Horse Show, Trooping the Colour, Invictus Games—we're definitely looking forward to the behind-the-scenes photos she and the rest of the royal family share with us instead.
