John Legend & Alicia Keys Announce Piano Battle in Honor of Juneteenth

Two of the music industry’s most talented artists—Alicia Keys and John Legend—are preparing to battle it out in a virtual piano competition.

This Friday, the duo will star in a must-watch episode of Verzuz, an Instagram Live series that has been staging riff-offs between popular musicians. (Previous match ups include T-Pain and Lil Jon, Ludacris and Nelly, and Kirk Franklin and Fred Hammond.)

This particular face-off, aptly titled “Battle of the Pianos,” is in honor of Juneteenth, an American holiday commemorating the end of slavery. Verzuz hasn’t revealed any further details about the confrontation, but if Keys’s two-piano performance at the 2019 Grammy Awards is any indication, then Legend has some big shoes pedals to fill.

“Celebrating Juneteenth with a special edition of #Verzuz! It’s a battle of the pianos with me vs. @AliciaKeys this Friday, June 19th at 8ET/5PT,” Legend wrote on Twitter.

Keys also announced the exciting news on her personal Instagram account and wrote, “Battle of the [piano] Juneteenth! With my brother @johnlegend.”

“Battle of the Pianos” will take place on Friday, June 19, at 8 p.m. sharp. Oh, and did we mention that Legend’s seventh studio album, Bigger Love, is scheduled to be released that same day?

May the odds be ever in your favor.
