We're Calling It: ‘Joker’ Will Sweep This Year's Golden Globes

With the Golden Globes only two short days away, we’re prepared to make some bold (or not-so-bold, depending on how you look at it) predictions.

While you never quite know what might happen during the televised event (that’s part of the fun, isn’t it?), this year’s contenders are offering up some stiff competition. But we’re calling it now, Joker is going to claim a number of wins this year—and here's why we think so.

First of all, the film was nominated in a total of four categories, meaning the Hollywood Foreign Press Association considers it to be one of the year's best. Sure, Marriage Story received the most nods of any film, but Joker’s extremely unique story and incredible performances are sure to give the competition a run for their money. Joaquin Phoenix’s performance is groundbreaking and disturbing. He is clearly deserving of the win for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama, and we think the HFPA will agree.

Best Actor is a tough category for sure, with Adam Driver having one of the most successful years of his career and buzz building about Christian Bale’s performance in Ford Vs. Ferrari. However, Phoenix (who previously won a Golden Globe for Walk the Line) likely has the upper-hand for his more talked-about, transformational take on the iconic villain. And come on, the guy lost 50 pounds for this role.

As far as the Best Motion Picture, Drama category goes, we feel Marriage Story would be a safe (and totally understandable) choice here. But the HFPA is known for surprising us and something in our gut says that they're ready to shake things up with Joker.

We also think the film has a great chance of taking home the statuette for Best Original Score. Hildur Gudnadottir's haunting music could easily beat out the Newman cousins for Marriage Story and 1917. The only category we’re not banking on for the Joker win? Best Director. But hey, when you’re up against Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino and Bong Joon Ho, you can’t expect to win them all.

But don’t just take our word for it. Google data also supports our theories, with Joker being the most searched motion picture in the drama category and Joaquin Phoenix being the most searched actor among the best actor in a drama nominees.

We guess we’ll just have to wait until Sunday to find out for sure, but our money's on Phoenix and Joker
