Colin Jost's Mom Tried to Convince Him & Scarlett Johansson to Change the Name of Their Baby

When it comes to naming your kid, you're always going to get lots of input from others, especially your family.

Apparently, when Colin Jost and Scarlett Johansson welcomed their baby, Cosmo, back in August, Jost's mother was a little uncertain about their name choice. Jost recounted the story on Late Night with Seth Meyers shortly after the host asked how the family reacted to the name “Cosmo.”

“My family is very supportive, always,” Jost said, but then he added, “My mom, I would say, was slightly thrown by it and didn't quite understand it.”

He further explained, “I don't know if she thought it was kind of, like, a hippie thing, but...she would call us and say, you know, after three or four days, she'd be like, ‘Cosmo...And now, is it final? Like did you submit the birth certificate?’ And we're like, ‘Oh yeah, we did that at the hospital,’ and she's like, ‘OK, interesting.’”

Jost's mother suggested a few variations of the name, including Cosimo and Cosmos, before ultimately deciding that she was content with Cosmo.

“She lives in Staten Island,” Jost said. “So eventually, she started meeting various members of the Italian community who have a lot of Cosmo relatives. And so then she would call, and she would say, ‘I met someone. They said their uncle's name is Cosmo. So it is OK.’”

While his mother may not have been totally set on the idea, Jost confirmed, “But now we did lock [the name] in.”

Jost and Johansson have been together since May of 2017, and they got married in October of last year. Cosmo is their first child together.

We're just glad everyone's pleased with the name now. (And we're still waiting on that first official pic of Cosmo.)
