Cardi B’s Head-Turning Oyster Gown Was Actually a ’90s Throwback

Cardi B’s red carpet ensemble was...cumbersome? Perhaps. Worth it? Definitely.

While Twitter was already busy speculating whether her gown was inspired by coffee filters or clams, Cardi B was prepping for her Grammys performance. And it turns out, the mollusk-inspired gown wasn’t just a photo op: It’s actually a vintage design from Thierry Mugler’s Fall 1995 Couture Collection, according to Vogue.

The gown features a sheer torso, which Cardi paired with a nude bra underneath. From the hips up, the gown flows into the shape of a shell, and the curve-hugging bottom half gives off serious mermaid vibes. The whole look required a team of dress carriers to keep things...erm...afloat.

When you’re nominated for five awards (including Album of the Year), you better pull out all the stops.
