We Finally Have a Trailer for Scarlett Johansson’s 'Black Widow' (and a First Look at David Harbour’s Character)

*Warning spoilers ahead*

Our favorite Russian spy-turned-superhero is back...

On Tuesday, Marvel dropped the first trailer for the highly anticipated Black Widow film, which follows Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) heading home to explore some unfinished business from her assassin days. And things look...intense.

Johansson nabbed a $15 million payday for this flick, which is Black Widow’s first-ever standalone movie. The actress handpicked Cate Shortland (Berlin Syndrome) to direct the movie, along with Jac Schaeffer (Olaf’s Frozen Adventure), who penned the script. Her character was previously in six Marvel films—including the most recent Avengers: Endgame.

If you saw the last film, you might be wondering (as were we) just exactly how Natasha returns for this film (since she sacrificed herself in Endgame). Well, technically she doesn’t. The new movie takes place after 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, when all of the Avengers went their separate ways.

In the trailer, we see Natasha reunite with her sister Yelena (Florence Pugh), supposed enemy Malena (Rachel Weisz) and the Soviet’s own Captain America, the Red Guardian (David Harbour). Yes, the David Harbour from Stranger Things.

So Who Is David Harbour’s Character, Red Guardian?

In short, Harbour is playing Alexei Shostakov, a Soviet agent who was chosen to become his country’s equivalent of Captain America.

In the comics, the Red Guardian and the Black Widow have quite the relationship—they are even married for a while. But by the looks of this trailer, it doesn’t seem like that’s the case.

I guess we won’t know for sure until Black Widow hits theaters on May 1, 2020.
