The Music in ‘Big Little Lies’ Season 2 Contains Hidden Clues & Meanings

If the soundtrack for season two of Big Little Lies strikes a chord with you, you’re not alone. In fact, the creators recently revealed that they hid clues about the show within the music, and we can’t believe we didn’t see this coming.

In an interview with Elle magazine, executive producer Jean-Marc Vallée discussed BLL’s beloved soundtrack and confirmed that season two, episode four concluded with a musical hint about what’s to come.

“At the end of four, we were looking for a track to finish…but done in a way where we could also have the feeling that something mysterious is going on,” he said.

The showrunner is referring to the last scene in episode four, which features Bonnie’s mother, Elizabeth (Crystal Fox), lying in a hospital bed after suffering what appeared to be a stroke. When she wakes up, she’s overcome with a vision of her daughter, Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz), floating in the ocean, while a cover of Timmy Thomas’s “Why Can’t We Live Together” plays in the background.

According to Vallée, the song was supposed invoke a sense of mystery. “We’re wondering, What the hell is this? What is she seeing? What are these visions?” he added.

Episode four wasn’t the only installment to contain a hidden clue. In fact, music supervisor Simon Astall also revealed that they created a playlist for each of the main characters. “The way we started it was we had different playlists for each character, with thoughts of where they might be in their lives,” he said.

For example, Renata (Laura Dern) has an unofficial theme song in the show’s second season: “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted” by Jimmy Ruffin. Although it was supposed to only be featured in episode two, the creators decided to incorporate it into other aspects of Renata’s story line.

“We thought, why don’t we put it in while she’s driving in episode one and then have it in her car again?” Vallée added.

If you need us, we’ll be rewatching (and re-listening to) all four episodes of BLL season two.
