Long before she appeared in Ocean’s 8 and Crazy Rich Asians, Awkwafina paid the price for making an inappropriate rap video.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 29-year-old revealed that she used to work in the music industry. (Not only did she rap, but she also dabbled in producing.) After making a low-budget music video about her, um, lady parts, the actress learned the hard way that she wasn’t in the right field after getting fired.
“That was the worst day of my life because it signified my last effort at a life that I knew completely wasn’t me,” she said. “You can’t put out a video like ‘My Vag’ and then also have a 401(k)—like, it doesn’t work.”
Nevertheless, Awkwafina found a place in the entertainment industry, and she couldn’t be more thrilled. “Right now, the industry is headed in a direction that is very, very positive, and I think that the reason why I’m working is a literal result of that,” she added. “This might sound weird, but I think that I was looking for someone like me when I was little, just to feel less alone.”
