Before Ashley Graham was a body-positivity advocate, the host of American Beauty Star and a designer, she was a model struggling to break free of the labels the fashion world put on her. And when the 31-year-old decided to start her new podcast, Pretty Big Deal, it felt only right to pay homage to her background in the “plus size” modeling world. So, her husband, Justin Ervin, came up with a clever way to turn her experience on its head.
Graham recalled how Ervin, 30, landed on the name for her popular podcast during an interview with Elle, “He said it so practically: Pretty Big Deal,” she explained. “I was like, ‘Why?,’ and he’s like, ‘You’ve always been called pretty for a big girl…You’re my pretty big deal, and all the people that you’re gonna be interviewing are a pretty big deal.’”
With that, Graham said, “Perfect. Let’s do it,” and the rest is history.
Now that she’s interviewed everyone from Serena Williams to Amy Schumer, we’d say the moniker turned out to be quite fitting.
