How I Chose the Best Fall Sweaters
To cull our picks from all that the internet has to offer, I spoke with Cara Benevenia and Kate Wasserbach Moore, who went into detail about which fabrics are preferred, which brands are worth checking out and how to store sweaters properly. I used those recommendations as my starting point, then cross-referenced my picks against customer reviews to ensure they're quality. I also made sure to include a variety of different materials, styles, sizes and price points.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Is the Best Fabric for Sweaters?
With so many cute fall sweaters to choose from, you might feel a tad overwhelmed, which is why we’ve honed in on some of the best fabrics for sweaters, so picking your new autumnal wardrobe will be a (crisp) breeze.
- Cashmere: Opting for luxury? Kate and Cara agree that cashmere is the ultimate pick, renowned for its unparalleled softness and warmth.
- Mohair: Yearning for a fluffier option? Mohair, made from the hair of the Angora goat, is the way to go. “I always find Mohair sweaters playful!” says Kate.
- Merino Wool: Merino wool sweaters are favored for their exceptional breathability and versatility, earning the stamp of approval from both Kate and Cara.
- Alpaca: “Alpaca sweaters combine warmth and a touch of rustic charm,” says Kate.
- Cotton: Cotton is a lightweight and breathable option, which Kate and Cara both suggest opting for.
- Wool-Cashmere Blend: “A blend of wool and cashmere offers the best of both worlds—the warmth of wool and the luxury of cashmere!” says Kate.
What Brands Have Good Sweaters?
While there are a plethora of fantastic brands to choose from when selecting a cozy sweater, there are a few expert-approved ones that are definitely worth checking out. “Ralph, Burberry, J.Crew, Brooks Brothers, Theory, and I love Banana Republic and L.L. Bean sweaters for men and women at a good price,” says Kate. Similarly, Cara says her favorite is L.L. Bean, praising its classic and timeless styles at reasonable prices. “I also love Everlane, J.Crew, Ralph Lauren, Alex Mill, Aritzia and GAP,” she adds.
What Is the Best Way to Store Sweaters?
The best way to store your sweaters is folded in a drawer—yes, put those hangers away (unless you absolutely have to hang them…and in that case, read on to find out the best way to do that). Cara suggests folding your sweaters the Martha Stewart way, while Kate offers some great advice to keep moths at bay. “Not all of us have the luxury of a cedar closet, but you can get some subtle scents going in your closet to prevent the moths from invading. Cedar blocks or even lavender sachets work.”
What Are the Best Hangers for Sweaters?
Although both Kate and Cara suggest folding your sweaters instead of hanging them, if you must hang them, Kate says, “Think of Joan Crawford in Mommie Dearest, ‘No wire hangers ever!’ When it comes to the best hangers for sweaters, I'd say opt for padded or velvet hangers, preventing those pesky shoulder bumps that wire hangers tend to inflict. Treat your garments like royalty, and they will last forever!” Cara echoes Kate’s suggestions and says to opt for hangers with sloped edges to avoid indents forming on the shoulders.
