10 Sci-Fi Shows Every ‘Manifest’ Fan Will Love
The fact that Manifest claimed the top spot on Netflix just a day after its cancellation says quite a lot about its dedicated fanbase.
The sci-fi drama, which follows a group of airplane passengers who land five years in the future after boarding a flight from Jamaica, was canceled after just three seasons—and fans are not happy. Still, it looks like there’s hope for the show’s return, because according to Deadline, both NBC and Netflix are in talks about a possible renewal. Not to mention, hundreds of people are campaigning online to #saveManifest.
So, as we all eagerly await new updates on a potential season four (*fingers crossed*), we’re turning to shows like Manifest to keep us entertained for the time being. From Fringe to The 4400, read on for ten more titles you’ll enjoy.
Who’s in it? Joseph Fiennes, John Cho, Jack Davenport, Zachary Knighton
What’s it about? What would happen if everyone on the planet caught a glimpse of themselves six months in the future? This series tackles the question in such a fascinating way, and like Manifest, it expertly balances sci-fi and suspense with drama. When a mysterious event causes nearly everyone to simultaneously black out and see their future for two minutes, an elite team of FBI agents try to investigate what really happened.
Who’s in it? Naveen Andrews, Emilie de Ravin, Matthew Fox, Jorge Garcia, Maggie Grace
What’s it about? Many have dubbed Manifest the new version of Lost, and for good reason. Both shows have supernatural elements, are character driven and start off with a mysterious airplane incident. But in this case, we follow a group of passengers who are stuck on a mysterious island after a plane crash.
Who’s in it? Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson, John Noble, Jasika Nicole
What’s it about? Lost meets The Twilight Zone in this compelling sci-fi series, which follows the fictional Fringe Division of the FBI as they investigate a number of mysterious occurrences connected to a parallel world.
Who’s in it? Louis Hofmann, Oliver Masucci, Julika Jenkins
What’s it about? It’ll start off giving you Stranger Things vibes, since it centers on the aftermath of a child's mysterious disappearance. However, the series is much darker and more complex than you’d expect. Though the overall tone is very different compared to Manifest, it involves time travel and packs a lot of tension and mystery.
5. ‘The Returned’
Who’s in it? Anne Consigny, Frédéric Pierrot, Clotilde Hesme, Céline Sallette
What’s it about? Inspired by the French film They Came Back, this series follows a number of dead residents of a small-town who mysteriously come back to life and try to resume living as if nothing happened. What could possibly go wrong?
6. ‘Into the Night’
Who’s in it? Jan Bijvoet, Nabil Mallat, Pauline Etienne, Laurent Capelluto
What’s it about? One can argue that this series isn't a lot like Manifest, but it does involve a fascinating, plane-related mystery that'll have you feeling both confused and mildly intrigued. A group of passengers on a hijacked plane discover that their only chance of survival is staying on board and avoiding the sun’s fatal rays.
7. ‘The 4400’
Who’s in it? Joel Gretsch, Jacqueline McKenzie, Mahershala Ali, Laura Allen
What’s it about? Exactly 4,400 people magically reappear on Earth after vanishing for years with no explanation. None of them have aged and, apparently, they’ve all gained mysterious new powers. Where do they go from here?
8. ‘The Leftovers’
Who’s in it? Justin Theroux, Amy Brenneman, Christopher Eccleston, Liv Tyler
What’s it about? Based on Tom Perrotta's book of the same name, The Leftovers explores the fallout of the sudden disappearance of 140 million people around the globe. If you're partial to thought-provoking mysteries that touch on deeper issues like religion and sexuality, then this show is right up your alley.
9. ‘The OA’
Who’s in it? Brit Marling, Emory Cohen, Scott Wilson, Phyllis Smith
What’s it about? While Manifest follows a group of passengers who return after a five-year disappearance, The OA centers on one young girl who, after disappearing for years, returns home with new abilities—and a plan to carry out a secret mission.
Who’s in it? William Fichtner, Eddie Cibrian, Kari Matchett, Lisa Sheridan
What’s it about? This show is like a cross between Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Lost. After a huge hurricane hits a small town in Florida, strange creatures begin to take over the bodies of random residents. Watch for the creepy storyline and constant build-up of suspense.
