The trailer offers a few glimpses of Plemons and Collins as the married couple, while Segel plays the unstable criminal who's holding them hostage. But as the teaser unfolds, tensions rise between Plemons's character and the intruder, and we're led to believe that the two have a complicated history.
According to Charlie McDowell, who directed the film, the plot was partially inspired by the pandemic. He told Entertainment Weekly, "What I thought was interesting about this particular story coming out of this moment in time was feeling imprisoned to your own home, to your own space. We've always pictured our home and our place as the safe haven to the outside world. And what I was interested in telling was a story where, what if that space gets invaded and doesn't feel safe anymore?"
He continued, "That is what happened to us, I think, in the pandemic. We were trapped within the confines of our own space, and everything felt scary, and we kind of went through every single different emotion you could go through, and I think we're all connected in that way."
The film was written by Justin Lader and Andrew Kevin Walker, based on a story by Segel. And both Collins and Plemons serve as producers alongside Segel.
Thankfully, we won't have to wait too long before we see how the story ends. Windfall hits Netflix on Friday, March 18.
