Issa Rae Releases First Look at Her New Comedy Series, ‘Rap Sh!t’

Are you missing Insecure? If you’re like the rest of us, then we have some very exciting news for you. Writer, producer and actress Issa Rae is coming out with a new HBO Max series that’s like the ABC series Queens, but with a hint of comedy.

This week, the streaming service dropped the first teaser of her new series, Rap Sh!t. The comedy series revolves around two estranged high school friends named Shawna (Aida Osman) and Mia (KaMillion) from Miami, Florida. They reunite to form a rap group, giving us the chance to see the obstacles women face in the hip-hop industry, which is a male-dominated field.

In an exclusive interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Rae opened up about the series and what she hopes fans take away from it. “I think this is just such a unique time in hip-hop, especially when it comes to female rappers, because there’s such an abundance, and it doesn’t feel like they’re all in competition with each other,” she told the outlet.

She continued, “I’m a child of the ’90s, and there used to always be a tendency to put two women against one another. It feels like we’re in an era where there’s such a supportive environment now because of that abundance. All of that, combined with just my own story of coming up, became the next story that I wanted to tell.”

Rae is set to be the executive producer, with City Girls rap duo Yung Miami and JT serving as co-executive producers on the comedy series.

Save the date because Rap Sh!t premieres on HBO Max on July 21.
