This Movie Nabbed Best Picture at the Producers Guild Awards Which Could Mean It’s a Shoo-In to Win the Oscar

We've still got a week until the 94th Academy Awards, but we already have an idea as to what film could win Best Picture on Hollywood's biggest night.

Last night, at the 33rd annual Producers Guild Awards, the producers of CODAFabrice Gianfermi, Philippe Rousselet and Patrick Wachsberger—took home the top prize for Best Theatrical Motion Picture, also referred to as the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.

As Deadline pointed out, with the Apple TV+ original taking home the Best Picture award, this is the first time in the history of the PGAs that a streaming film has won this prize. Meanwhile, it also suggests that CODA has a good chance of winning Best Picture when the Academy Awards roll around next Sunday, March 27.

CODA (which stands for “child of deaf adults”) follows the story of Ruby (Emilia Jones), a high-schooler who is the only hearing member of her family. When she's not at school, Ruby helps with her family's fishing business, where she passes the time by singing. However, due to her impressive voice, Ruby's choir teacher, Mr. Villalobos (Eugenio Derbez), ends up convincing her to apply to the Berklee College of Music, which causes complications within her family.

With a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it's no wonder that CODA was among the ten films nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars this year. And while the competition is quite stacked, another good indicator that CODA might take home the top prize is the fact that it also won Best Picture at the Hollywood Critics Association Film Awards.

Those seem like good odds to us. But, we'll just have to wait another week to see what movie comes out on top.
