7 Local Gyms with Online Workouts to Get You Through Shelter in Place

Illinois’s shelter in place order is in effect until April 30, which means you and your gym need to maintain a long-distance romance. To make that possible, many local studios and fitness centers are offering classes online. We’ve rounded up seven with streaming schedules to lift your spirits, bolster your health and (if nothing else) force you to keep track of what day it is.

How to Spend Your Downtime When You’re Social Distancing in Chicago

1. Mazi Dance Fitness

As much as we like to think that all those TikTok dances add up to a full workout, they don’t. Good thing Mazi Dance Fitness has posted on-demand dance, cardio box and HIIT routines that will boost your immunity and cardiovascular health, not to mention your daily fun factor. Try it for free for your first seven days; it’s $14.99/month after that. You can also join live streaming classes daily for $15 each. And, if nothing else, you can do these Mazi-inspired ballet moves from bed.

2. Studio Three

All you need to join Studio Three’s free tabata, yoga and dance cardio workouts is an Instagram account. Seriously, since the instructors gear classes toward people at home, you can even do them without free weights (but you might want to grab some soup cans). The 45- to 60-minute classes take place three times a day Monday through Saturday, making it all the easier to join their #S3LiveChallenge and tackle 30 classes in 30 days.

3. Zen Yoga Garage

If the daily headlines have you in need of some zen, turn to Zen Yoga Garage. The Bucktown studio is streaming 60-minute vinyasa classes and free meditations to help you stay fit in both body and mind. The diverse schedule ranges from the eclectic (tarot card workshops) to the downright essential (yoga for kids). And in case you can no longer remember what day it is, recordings of past classes are available.

4. Shred 415

Shred 415 offers fast-paced HIIT workouts that get you out of your head and into your body—something you can probably use right now. Start with the brand’s IGTV channel, which is full of short workouts you can do anytime, anywhere. When you’re ready for more, sign up for a 45- to 60-minute virtual workout. Classes are free for doctors, nurses, grocery store workers, pharmacists and more.

5. Bloom Yoga

Bloom is one of Chicago’s most trusted studios for prenatal yoga, so it’s no surprise that its online classes have plenty of options for the whole family. Tune in for courses that suit all skill levels, as well as kids or mom-and-baby classes, which are offered four to five times a day. You can also find free community yoga once a week.

6. Frog Temple Pilates

You don’t need a reformer machine to do Frog Temple’s virtual pilates classes. Instructors at the 20-year-old studio guide you through mat techniques that harness your bodyweight to build muscle tone and flexibility. With sessions four to five times a day, seven days a week, plus options for expecting mothers, private sessions and free workouts on Instagram and Facebook live, the studio has made it all super accessible.

7. Chicago Athletic Clubs

If you prefer the variety of a gym, check out Chicago Athletic Club’s daily virtual workouts, which run the gamut from tai chi to studio cycle. The multi-location gym has also created a free fitness program with three workouts a week to inspire your at-home routine for four whole weeks. In times like these, that kind of structure can go a long way.
