Exclusive: Zooey Deschanel Says She & Joseph Gordon-Levitt Have Discussed a ‘500 Days of Summer’ Sequel

If you’re like us, then you love the true-to-life rom-com film 500 Days of Summer. Tom’s idealism! Summer’s Sid and Nancy line! The wise sister! Ten years after the film’s release, there’s still a lot to like about the movie, but also many questions left unanswered. For one, will there ever be a sequel that shows us how the protagonists end up?

When we chatted with Zooey Deschanel about her new Crocs Come as You Are campaign, we of course asked if there’s a world in which she and Joseph Gordon-Levitt would reunite for another 500 Days of Summer. Her response was exciting, needless to say.

“Joe and I always talked about doing a sequel,” the 39-year-old New Girl star revealed to PureWow exclusively.

So why hasn’t it happened yet? As Deschanel explained, “We never quite figured it out because we thought it would be fun to do 500 Days of Tom from Summer’s point of view. The movie is so from Tom’s point of view. So, we thought it would be interesting to see her point of view.”

She went on to say, “I don’t know if it would ever happen, but it would be fun.”

We have to agree. And so does Gordon-Levitt seemingly. The 38-year-old actor recently spoke out about his character, saying the breakup was “mostly Tom’s fault.”

“He’s projecting. He’s not listening. He’s selfish. Luckily he grows by the end,” he Tweeted.

Now if only we could see that growth come to life in a sequel…
