Beyoncé’s Dad Just Announced a Destiny’s Child Musical Is in the Works—And We’re Not Ready for This Jelly

This is not a drill: A Destiny's Child musical is in the works, according to Beyoncé’s father, Mathew Knowles. 

This announcement comes on the heels of the premiere of Beyoncé’s highly anticipated Coachella documentary, Homecoming, where she and fellow Destiny’s Child alums Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams took the stage for a reunion performance that had us begging for a comeback. Now, almost 30 years since the group’s 1990 inception, fans will get a behind-the-scenes look at how one of the most iconic girl groups of all time was created in Survivor: The Destiny’s Child Musical.

As the co-creator and manager of the original band, Mathew Knowles opened up about his plans in an interview with Broadway World: “I want to pull back the curtain. I feel it’s time to give the world an opportunity to hear, see and feel the victories and failures that I’ve had as a husband, father and manager who risked everything in pursuit of fulfilling dreams—those of mine and others.” Told from his perspective, the musical will follow the group from their humble beginnings to their platinum-level stardom.

Knowles also brought on writer/director/producer Je’Caryous Johnson (who previously worked on Snoop Dogg’s bio-musical Redemption of a Dogg) to bring his story to life: “It is my mission to tell the stories of our legends and cement their legacies in the history of our world, but this one is very dear to me....I can assure their fans, and mine, that I will give everything I have to this story and will make sure it is the greatest show they ever experienced!”

Excited yet? Us too. Survivor: The Destiny’s Child Musical is set to premiere in Houston in 2020 with plans of moving on to Broadway, London’s West End and (hopefully) its own world tour.
